Most official sources now agree that the virus effects people are experiencing are “mild” and comparable with COMMON flu.
There really is no need to “panic”, but you should take heed of suggestions to ensure you wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face and mouth, and use strict hygiene when coughing or sneezing. (All things we should already be doing really :o)
It is probable that the virus will continue to spread, and there may even be a sustained period of ‘inactivity’ before the onset of another ‘wave’ of illnesses.
The main danger does not appear to be from the virus itself, but from subsequent illness such as pneumonia, as the body’s immune system reacts to fight the virus.

WHAT KIND OF FLU IS IT AND HOW IS IT SPREADING?
The virus is an influenza A virus, carrying the designation A9 H1N1 and is spreading from person to person. It contains DNA from four distinct strains (hybrid):
North American avian
North American swine
Human Influenza
European and Asian swine
There is no vaccine that specifically protects against A9 H1N1. It will take several months to develop, test, manufacture and distribute a vaccine.
Two of the four main anti-viral drugs have been reported as being effective against A9 H1N1.
The World Health Organization, which has identified swine influenza as a potential source of a human flu pandemic, has also activated its global epidemic operations center.
They have now also said that the spread is ‘calming down’.
The Pandemic Preparedness Level is currently at - Phase 6 - Pandemic
CDC says it is too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.
Of the initial 14 Mexican samples tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seven were identical to the swine flu virus found in Texas and Southern California.
This indicates that the strain has NOT yet mutated into a less virulent form.
A WHO spokesman said 12 out of 18 samples taken from the Mexican victims showed they died from a virus with the same genetic structure as the one found in the US.

Ten New Zealand school pupils just returned from Mexico are likely to have contracted swine flu, officials said on Sunday.
The infected pupils were part of a group of 25 teachers and students from a secondary school in the country’s biggest city, Auckland, who had been tested after showing influenza-like symptoms a day after returning from three weeks in Mexico.
“Ministry of Health officials advise me there is no guarantee these students have swine influenza, but they consider it likely,” Health Minister Tony Ryall said in a statement.
“However, I am also informed none of the affected patients are considered seriously ill, and most in fact seem to be on the road to recovery.”
The 10 students had tested positive for Influenza A, and their results would be sent to the World Health Organization laboratory in Australia to ascertain whether it was the H1N1 swine influenza, Ryall said.
The affected students were being treated with the drug Tamiflu and stocks have been released to cope with any further cases.
Students from a second Auckland school were also reported by local media to have just returned from a trip to Mexico, but had shown no flu symptoms.
The deadly swine flu strain has killed up to 81 people in Mexico and infections have also been found in the United States.
New Zealand has activated its national pandemic disease plan, with increased checks of incoming international flights.
